Favorite Christmas music ... #6 ...

It's difficult to think of gospel music without the name Mahalia Jackson coming immediately to mind, and this rendition of her singing "What Child is This?" is just wonderful.

I've never even heard of Mahalia Jackson, but this was really pretty. I was listening, and all the girls came in here to hear this song. Thanks for posting it. :)

My daughter and I talked at some length yesterday, Tammy, about how one person's background can be so different from another's.

I didn't grow up in a musical family, but I always loved to sing and was an incurable romantic until sometime in my late 40's. The 'incurable romantic' part has nothing whatsoever to do with Mahalia. (Ideas are just swirling around in my head right now. There'll be a post or two coming in the future, I'm sure, but I'll get back to Mahalia.)

Wiki has a really nice writeup about her. "Widely regarded as the greatest gospel singer in history," they say.

Of deep faith, she refused to sing anything that wasn't of a religious nature.

It's hard to believe she died 36 years ago!! There are many recordings available of her singing, most of which (unfortunately) do not show the full timbre of her voice. This one's good!
