Favorite Christmas music ... #2 ...

There are many versions of "Little Drummer Boy" - this one by Bing Crosby is my favorite.

">

December 25th update ... If you're getting the message, "This video removed due to terms of use violation", I just want you to know that you are not alone. It's listed NOwhere now on YouTube that I can find or I would have made an attempt to relink it here. I don't know what happened. I'm really not interested in hearing David Bowie. I'm kind of sad about this. Does anyone have any idea what might have gone wrong?

Favorite Christmas music ... #1 ...

A few years ago, I seized upon the opportunity to go and hear Mannheim Steamroller in person at the Toyota Center here in Houston.

I was introduced to their music by Rush Limbaugh, actually, long before that, and had three CDs of their Christmas music that I would play - over and over again - when I was driving a cab. In fact, one time I had one of theirs playing when a policeman came over and wanted to know what radio station I had on so that he could listen in his own car!

I am pleased to share with you now Mannheim Steamroller's version of "Silent Night" as I heard it in person. You may want to close your eyes while you listen if you find the visuals too distracting. Here it is ... ...

This was initially scheduled to be published last Sunday, but I couldn't get the YouTube link to work properly. I'll be posting #2 in this series in just a few minutes.

Untitled

I have written a lot of poems over the years. The subjects range from love and relationships to sports - all over the place, really, kind of like my blog. Some of them are intensely personal and probably shouldn't be shared.

This one (one of the more shareable), however, is one of my favorites. I added some remarks a few years later that I'll include in parentheses following the poem.

Split second flashes of hopes & dreams
Unhoped for in my daily schemes

Are but illusions to be filed away
When he expresses his doubts to me this way.

I'm not solid enough to hold fast
While he's scampering -- breathing his last

Breaths of freedom, non-commitment & daring do.
I can't handle it. Should I? Would you?!

My years in therapy were spent for me,
Not for someone who wants to stay free!

He must be allowed to go his own way,
If he truly loves me, he'll want to stay

Forever and work things out
Together ... we're both in doubt

And fearful of another marriage
But that's no reason to disparage

The name, the question, the love, the want
That's in us both! Leave us, past! Don't haunt

Us with fantasies of what might have been!
I want him here ... holding my hand

As I want to grasp his with all of my might
And not let go, even when he's out of sight.

Leave us, past! Can we not start anew
Like each day, when the dawn breaks through,

Shedding its light & hope around
Where before all had turned to brown?

Why cannot we, like the one who believes,
Be like the trees, turning our leaves

Toward the sky -- with faith and trust --
That we be nourished and our love not rust

In the weathering of knowledge & human-ness.

(Except for the line, "As I want to grasp his with all of my might And not let go, even when he's out of sight," I imagine I would write one today of a very similar nature if I were in the same situation. I would not wish to grasp his hand quite so tightly today. I didn't then, either. It was only in the poem.)

I didn't put a date on this, because I'm not sure exactly when it was written. It would have been somewhere in the very early 1980's, with the added remarks written before I started driving a taxicab in 1989. You can see what a dreamer I was!

Car Sickness

"jabo" left a comment yesterday on a post I published May 17th, "Car troubles" . Do you remember that one, by any chance?

It was extra long, even by my standards, and started out with a simple grease and oil change, moving on to an alert mechanic, problems getting a rental car, scheduling customer pickups to/from the airports, credit card and online questions, etc. It was a pretty good post, I thought, and I had a lot of fun re-reading it. It brought back vivid memories of that very long day!

His comment, which you can read for yourself if you go back to that post, focused on the need for maintaining one's car to try and avoid even more costly repairs in the future. Spot on, of course, but the comment made me think of a poem I thought I remembered writing many years ago.

I finally found it! Here it is, written 3/18/81, titled as above ...

Oh, I wish that I could say to one & all,
"My car has given me no trouble, to my recall!"

Here I sit, at Mac's AAA Garage,
Waiting for Butch & his entourage

Of never-ending patience with my car's many ills ...
Clutch, lighter, brakes, tires, radio, shocks ... it gives one the chills!

Sometimes I am tempted to sell this beast
Of burden. Poor thing! Then, I think, "At least

It has gotten me through this far,
Perhaps I don't need another car

Just yet." What do you think?
Has it finally reached the brink

Of extinction from this earth,
No longer what it once was worth?

30 questions

Got this idea from Tammy. Don't think I've ever done a meme, so this'll be a first.

1. One person who made me laugh recently. Chuck - I'm a cat lover, so really appreciated this post. Brought back many memories.

2. What was I doing at 8am? It won't be 8am for another half hour or so. If I remember to do it, I'll come back and tell you.

3. What was I doing 30 minutes ago? Making fresh coffee, deleting SPAM, and reading Tammy's post. (Busy little beaver, wasn't I?)

4. What did I do in 2006? Drove a taxicab almost 24/7, taught bridge, and even managed to get in a game or two of duplicate now and then.

5. Last thing I said aloud? Read this question off of Tammy's post.

6. Beverages? Black coffee, sugar free/Diet A&W root beer or Sprite, and Chivas. I'm not much of a water drinker except for Wednesday mornings, when I down a bunch of it with my weekly pill. Oh! Forgot to mention orange juice. If my body feels like it's trying to come down with something, I guzzle oj. Works pretty well for me.

7. What color is my hairbrush? Don't remember. Will have to go look. ... ... It's wood, a light brown - have had it for centuries!

8. Last thing I paid for? Insurance (yearly premium) - check's going out in the mail today.

9. Where was I last night? At home.

10. Front door color? Kind of a rust brown on the outside, white inside. (Boring!)

11. Where do I keep my change? Driver's side front door - a habit from all my years as a cab driver.

12. What's the weather like today? Don't know. Haven't been outside yet. However, we had a pretty good-sized cold front blow through here last night, so it'll be about twenty degrees cooler today than yesterday. (Don't read this, Tammy, or anyone else from up north, OK? It was 79 degrees yesterday. That's an ouchie, isn't it? Sorry about that, but you did ask! By the way, the furnace is running as I write this - thermostat is set at 72 degrees.)

13. Best ice cream flavor? I don't eat ice cream anymore, but - if I did, it would be butter pecan. When I was a kid, it was chocolate. Still like chocolate, but I like butter pecan better.

14. What excites me? A well-turned phrase, a bridge coup, running across someone I haven't seen or been in contact with for years, discovering a new (for me) blogsite that I intend to add to my 'Favorites' list, a new book by one of my favorite authors, finding something I thought was lost forever - lots of things, actually.

15. Am I over the age of 25? HA!!

16. Do I talk a lot? Not usually. I used to be a lot more social than I am now. However, I am still known to carry on some pretty long conversations every now and again. I write a lot!

17. What color socks did I wear today? Imagine what one of the Dr. Seuss characters would wear - a very loud and multi-colored stripe. Trying to keep my tootsies warm inside of fur-lined moccasins.

[It's now after 8am, so you have the answer to #2.]

18. Do I know anyone named Steve? Not at the moment.

19. Am I a jealous person? Not usually, but sometimes I can feel that little green man sneaking up behind me.

20. Last person I talked with on the phone? One of my long-timey cab customers - wants me to pick up her sister tomorrow night at Hobby Airport.

21. The last text message I received? Same oh same oh every day - a weather report. Don't know how I got on that list, but it's innocuous enough and easily deleted.

22. Do I chew on my straw? I don't remember the last time I used a straw! The answer if I did, tho, would be 'no'.

23. Do I have curly hair? Wavy, which begins showing the day after I wash it.

24. Where's the next place you're going to? Out to the mailbox to mail that insurance check. (What an exciting life I lead!)

25. Who is the rudest person in my life? Well, I try and avoid negative situations and people. However, if I had to name one - and I won't in this post becuz there are some duplicate bridge players out there who read my blog - it would be from the world of bridge.

26. What was the last thing I ate? A grilled cheese sandwich.

27. Will I get married in the future? Surely you jest! Won't say never, but 'been there done that' unsuccessfully three times should be more than enuf, wouldn't you agree?

28. The best movie I've seen in the past 2 weeks? The Christmas Box, with Maureen O'Hara. Wonderful movie! Tonight, tho, I'm really looking forward to watching Driving Miss Daisy. It'll be shown on one of our local channels. It's been a long time since I've seen that one!

29. Is there anyone you like right now? What a weird question! Do you mean a boyfriend? (See #27) Do you mean a fellow blogger? (See #14) I feel very close to some of my blogger friends, and to Beth and Jacky. I like a lot of people, altho - if the absolute truth were to be told, I'm more of a loner now than I ever was in my whole life. I'm not lonely. I just usually prefer my own company. Have written about this before, I think, a time or two. Some of you might remember.

30. Long nails or short? The fact that I have nails at all is astounding! They're short, from 'centuries' of biting, but they're there. Don't usually use polish but - if I do, it's clear.

Thanks, Tammy, for your meme. I loved it!

PS. Word of the day? Centuries!

Full circle?

I spent a great deal of time yesterday reading about the Civil Rights movement in this country. "How did I ever get on that topic?" you might well ask.

Well, it's kind of a long story - and not a boring one, either, so grab yourself another cup of coffee and sit back. My journey began when, in search of inspiration for a post of my own, I started reading 'Favorites' that I hadn't checked up on in a while. This one stopped me dead in my tracks.

The author is a knitter - obviously, if you click on the link - and she has a lot of readers! I think it was Steven who put me on to her site, initially, but I'm not positive about that.

As I continued to read - I'm a knitter, altho not the caliber she is, so that sort of stuff is always interesting to me - I noted that she said she was among the finalists for Canada's 2008 best blog award and was thanking all those who had voted for her.

Well, that caught my attention and I immediately headed over to this site. Then, wouldn't you know, my curiosity got the best of me and I continued to click onto others' blogsites that either had been originally nominated or were among the top five going on to the next round in the voting. (Do we have such a thing here in the States? Probably. I'm just not aware of it if we do.)

One of those sites had a side margin (probably not using the right terminology here) that continued on like 'forever' - lots of links, quotes, references, etc. - I mean, just tons of stuff! Cite after cite, link after link. I clicked on a few and read them. All were of interest to me, particularly one that referenced a radio interview with Rosa Parks in 1956.

Did you realize that it's been 53 years now since that famous incident in Montgomery, Alabama, when she refused to give up her seat on a public bus to a white man? Perhaps the date - 12/01/55 - was at your mind's ready fingertips, but it wasn't at mine!

I was eighteen years old, living in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, a freshman in college, and very far removed from any sort of personal contact with the tremendous struggle and upheaval going on in this country.

I was interested in learning more about Rosa Parks. I knew who she was, but the rest of my stored 'information' was terribly faulty. I had always thought that she was somewhat elderly (she was in her early 40's!), was tired from her long day at work (she said that she was not!), and that she sat in the 'white section' because she was so tired (actually, she sat in the first row of the 'black section'!).

I 'knew' that she had been one of the sparks to ignite the modern Civil Rights movement. That was correct. What I did not know was that it was she who propelled Martin Luther King, Jr. on his way to national recognition.

There are so many stories! I found myself getting more and more immersed in this saga, and kept clicking on link after link, reference after reference.

It was while reading about the history of the Civil Rights movement here in the States that I came across the name Ida B. Wells. Now that name caught my attention because it is so close to my mother's! I immediately thought, "What if?" Wouldn't be unheard of, right? It couldn't have been my mother, because Ida B. Wells died in 1931, but still! Perhaps she was a distant relative?

Have you ever heard of Ida B. Wells? I had not, but - the more I read about her, the more I wish I had known her. What a woman she must have been! I stopped reading in the wee hours last night, but knew that this just had to be the subject of my next post.

And so here we have come - full circle, as it were. A termed 'African-American' (altho there are some other things thrown in there that no one seems to want to talk about, except in passing - ?!?) has recently been elected to become the next President of the United States.

My hopes and prayers are that he will provide our country with leadership, that he was not chosen 'because he is black', that he will occupy and preside over a White House that was originally built by slaves with dignity and humility, and that he will - in spite of his youth - be able to do so with honor and, in the end, distinguish himself as one of our greatest presidents.

Bits & pieces ...

Boy, this'll really be scattered, so I thought it would be best if I highlighted in bold each section - little or big, depending on the topic. Ready? Here we go ... ...

Dentist ...

I received a letter within the past week from the dentist whom I have seen and trusted 'off and on' for the past 30+ years. He's retiring. Dagnabit it! I hate change, particularly changes like this one!!

Why did I write 'off and on'? Well, there was a period of time there when I got into a snit and saw someone else for awhile. Not the best of decisions, but far down the line, actually, of bad decisions I've made. Far far down the line.

Anyhoo, he's 'selling his practice' to someone I've never heard of. (So what else is new? It's a big city.) SO, on my list for later today is to call and try and schedule an appointment for him to see me before his last day, which is next week!!! Ye Gods!!!! Me and 40,000 other people, no doubt. In fact, I'd better do that just as soon as I finish this post, huh? More later on the results of my phone call.

Ghost Whisperer ...

Did not watch Friday night. It was a rerun. Will be watching again this coming Friday to see what's going on in this series that has re-captured my attention. Will give you a full report Saturday, probably.

Orange Cinnamon Rolls ...

At the risk of what Steven termed turning this into a 'foody blog', there's a recipe that I'd like to share with you. I probably got it from Tammy, but I can't be sure. It sounds absolutely delicious, and should be perfect for the holidays - or any days, for that matter! Here it is ...

Cut the top off an orange ... hollow out the insides. Once orange is cleaned out, unroll canned cinnamon roll dough and wind into orange in a spiral. It may take more than one to fill the orange. ("Why not just hollow out two oranges and use three cans of cinnamon roll dough?" is my question! Makes sense to me, but you have to keep in mind that I haven't tried these yet!!) Place top back on orange and cover with foil. Cook either on open fire (?!?) or bake in oven @375 degrees for about 15 minutes, or until cinnamon rolls are done. They will have a nice orange flavor. (Well, I guess!)

Please share any of your success/failure stories.

SPAM report ...

I don't know how many pieces of this c-r-a-p you guys get each day, but let's just say I probably get my share.

I request an 'opt out' (for that which I never opted for in the first place!) every chance I get, and am having some success - not a lot, but some.

This past week, however, I have actually been making copies of some of the different types. I'm not going to go into detail about these in this post - "Thank you, Goldenrod," you say? - , but I am keeping track of all (along with their URLs, etc.) and intend to send them in bulk to the proper authorities for disposition as they see fit.

One word of warning - extreme caution, if you will - a couple of them want a copy of either my passport or driver's license. That's a new one. Folks, that is an absolute no-no! Under NO circumstances should you give anyone a copy of either of those items!!

Assisting God in a miracle ...

Somewhere in the past week, I read about a mother describing pregnancy and childbirth as being a unique opportunity to assist God in a miracle. I say 'Amen' to that!

Geez, I hope this doesn't sound sacrilegious here - my mind works in extremely convoluted ways (Now you know for sure!) -, but I was somehow reminded of Klinger in many of M*A*S*H's episodes. You know, the ones where he is trying to get out of the Army because his sister's dying/pregnant, his father's on his death bed, his mother's dying/pregnant (must have been the pregnant parts that reminded me), etc., etc.

I really miss seeing all of the reruns that Channels 20 and 26 used to show. Haven't called yet to complain or inquire as to when they might be putting this series back in their schedule. Need to do that. Spent quite some time these past few days on YouTube watching little clips. Laughed a lot.

Well, as you can probably tell, I'm feeling somewhat better. Hope you're OK. (?)
